Edward B. Green Distinguished Service Award
Frank V. Sica, AIA
History tells us that out of the many founders of the AIA/WNY Chapter, E.B. Green stood out as particularly dedicated, serving on the Executive Committee of the WNY Chapter for nine years. From correspondence that survived Green’s tenure as President, it is clear that he was a gentleman who maintained very high ethical standards, in addition to being a brilliant architect and role model for all architects in Western New York.
Frank Sica has consistently demonstrated this level of commitment to the profession and to the AIA through his work as well as his service—exemplifying the same personal integrity as E.B. Green. With outstanding leadership skills and experience amassed during more than 25 years of practice in architecture, planning, and operations management, Sica is one of Cannon Design’s most experienced, accomplished and valuable architects and project managers.
A member of the firm’s education and health science practices, Sica’s management and technical expertise has enabled the firm to successfully execute its most significant projects—exercising the vision to anticipate the potential problem areas that may occur during the life of a project. He frequently carries responsibility for the supervision of construction document production and construction administration—bringing to bear the strong management skills and expertise that translates into well-organized and successful projects that meet schedule and budget goals.
Sica is currently managing the design and construction of interdisciplinary science centers for both the State University of New York (SUNY) College at Buffalo and SUNY Oswego, Kaleida Health System’s Global Heart and Vascular Institute, and a 150-bed addition to Thornton Hospital for the University of California at San Diego. He previously managed such international projects as the Arison Medical Tower, an addition to the Tel Aviv Medical Center; the King Hussein Middle East Cancer Center in Israel; and the 1,500,000 sf Sabanci University in Turkey.
Additionally, he was part of the project team for such award-winning projects as Canisius College’s Montante Cultural Center, and the Buffalo Niagara International Airport, as well as completing multiple projects for Medaille College, Niagara University and Canisius High School.
But it is Sica’s commitment to the AIA is that is truly extraordinary. Since 2000, Sica has served on the Executive Committee for a total of nine years; Treasurer from 2000-2001; President Elect from 2002-2003 and President in 2004. In 2006, when the Chapter was without a Treasurer, he returned to the Board and served in that role until 2008. Through his tenure on the Executive Committee, Sica ensured that the Chapter’s resources grew to the point where it is today—a chapter that has distinguished itself with the signature programs that address the needs of its diverse membership.
